Michelle Sun, MD, MPH will come to the end of her 1-year fellowship in global ophthalmology at Kellogg in July 2024.  The third fellow in that position, she has observed, taught, examined patients, and operated in Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Rwanda, Burundi, and India, and will be rounding out her training with upcoming trips to Honduras and Jamaica. Under the direction of Joshua Ehrlich, MD, MPH, Kellogg Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, her training has included work toward a report on community-based eye care delivery coordinated through the Kisii Eye Hospital in Kenya and a research project on adherence to glaucoma care in the Aravind Eye Care System in South India.

From her experience, she reports that, “I have gained a more in-depth understanding of the challenges of providing high-quality eye care to rural populations in resource-limited areas. Working with ophthalmologists who have thought extensively and innovatively about sustainability will influence how I contribute to global ophthalmology.”

She spent significant time working in Kenya and Rwanda, but also had the opportunity to participate in three week-long surgical outreaches, one with an academic center, one with a local ophthalmologist, and one with an American missionary, which has given her a broad perspective on different approaches to eye care.

Dr. Sun will be joining the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania and will be involved in starting the global ophthalmology program there.
