The 18th annual meeting of the WAEH is getting closer and closer! From November 7 to 12, we will visit AIER Eye Hospital in Changsha and Shanghai Eye and ENT Hospital in Shanghai, China. Don’t miss this exciting event!

- New developments of last year
- Plans for 2024 – 2025?
- Short overview of the facts of your hospital
Timeline: all posters have to be digitally send to Maaike van Zuilen before November 1, 2024.

- Please note that the poster can be used for communications and marketing of the WAEH. If you do not agree, please state that when submitting your digital poster.

Participate in the Charity Run on Orange Island!
The Charity Run of the 18th annual meeting takes place on the iconic Orange Island (Juzi Island) in the Xiangjiang River. This event combines sports with charity and aims to raise money for a charity (later to be announced).
The route offers beautiful views of the surrounding area, including the famous Mao Zedong statue. In addition to the athletic challenge and charity, the morning run also offers participants the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty and cultural attractions of Orange Island.
In addition to running, walking is also allowed, making the event accessible to all. Participation costs 25 euros per person, and proceeds go to various charities associated with the AIER Eye Hospital Group.

The file attached introduces the Charity Run, the project funded by the Charity Run, the organizer – Eye Care Foundation (ECF) and some cases that ECF have done before.

Are you a Human Resources professional and working in a WAEH member eye hospital?
The Human Resources Community of practice takes place once every three months. This group meets to discuss topics such as Handholding – From Volunteer to Career, Employment model(s) in ophthalmology, Task differentiation and Burn out prevention. The group will share best practices and learn from each other. This group is led by Jos Hubers from The Rotterdam Eye Hospital, The Netherlands, and Angela Smith from the Moorfields Eye Hospital, United Kingdom. We will meet via Zoom every three months. WAEH Webinar: Living with Facial Eye Disfigurement in 2024
Register now for the WAEH Webinar about Living with Facial Eye Disfigurement in 2024 on the 26th September 2024! With Dr Zali O’Dea, Founding Director and Principal Counsellor/Educator of Karibu Anawim as our presenter!
In this introductory session Dr O’Dea explores the lived experience of people living with facial eye disfigurement (FED) through personal vignettes, media representations and statistics. People living with FED are often disregarded as the disfigurement is viewed as ‘slight’. The psychosocial and psychological ramifications living with FED are grossly discounted and underestimated. Zali welcomes you to participate as she takes you on a journey of a patient’s life outside the hospital setting.
Dr Zali O’Dea is the Founding Director and Principal Counsellor/Educator of Karibu Anawim meaning “Welcome to The Way of Victory”. Karibu Anawim trains, equips and nurtures individuals as well as their family members living with facial disfigurement, offering consultancy and professional development to professionals. Zali herself is a survivor of a car accident as a newborn and lives with third nerve palsy.
Zali thrives on helping people realise their full potential, knowing very well the limitations society places on people living with facial disfigurement. And enjoys assisting people find ‘The Way of Victory’ in their own lives.

Stem Cell Solutions for Corneal Transplants
Most people know the cornea is the outermost tissue of the eye — the part that you touch when you put in contact lenses. What people may not know is that the cornea has five layers, the innermost of which is the endothelium. When the function of the corneal endothelium is compromised either due to disease or trauma, the cornea loses its transparency, which results in vision loss.
Transplant surgery using human donor tissue is the only treatment available for corneal endothelial dysfunction. Unfortunately, corneal transplants using donor corneas are expensive and, owing to the shortage of transplantablegrade corneal tissue, are out of reach for many people, particularly those in underresourced nations.
Wilmer’s Amer Riazuddin, Ph.D., a rising star in ocular regenerative medicine, is focused on developing stem cell solutions to improve outcomes for people around the world who need these transplants.
