Tips for travelling

• Bring some cash money

• Buy a VPN before you arrive in China
• Use the Chinese address on our website when taking a taxi to your hotel
• Try to learn some simple Chinese phrases before traveling
• Be prepared for squat toilets and bring a pack of tissues or toilet paper everywhere!

China in November: tips on weather and clothing

In November, the weather in China starts to cool down significantly as winter approaches. Daytime temperatures are usually between 10°C and 18°C, but at night it can cool down considerably to around 5°C. It stays mostly dry, although there may be the occasional light rain.

For the 18th Annual Meeting, it’s smart to dress in layers. A jumper or cardigan is usually sufficient during the day, but as the sun sets, a warm coat becomes essential. Comfortable walking shoes are also a great choice for navigating the city.

2. Send Documentation: Please send a picture of your passport and the intended length of your stay in China to Maaike.

Posters Submit Request for WAEH Annual Meeting

Dear All Members,

On behalf of WAEH and upcoming annual meeting committee, we are very excited to greet and host all of you in Changsha China very soon. 

To take the great opportunity of further consolidating friendship, deepening mutually cooperation and achieving common development, we would like you to send us posters before October 25th so that it can be printed and displayed properly. We feel like and firmly believe that it is important to profile all members especially who joined association for a long time. It is expected that your business protofolio or the latest achievements can be shared among us to know more each other for future collaborations.

Your posters will be displayed inside meeting room during the whole period. Please find the attached pic. below about how the display area will be looking like. The poster size is at 24 inches x 36 inches (60.96 x 91.44cm).

Participate in the Charity Run on Orange Island!

The Charity Run of the 18th annual meeting takes place on the iconic Orange Island (Juzi Island) in the Xiangjiang River. This event combines sports with charity and aims to raise money for a charity (later to be announced). 

The route offers beautiful views of the surrounding area, including the famous Mao Zedong statue. In addition to the athletic challenge and charity, the morning run also offers participants the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty and cultural attractions of Orange Island.

In addition to running, walking is also allowed, making the event accessible to all. Participation costs 25 euros per person, and proceeds go to various charities associated with the AIER Eye Hospital Group.

The file attached introduces the Charity Run, the project funded by the Charity Run, the organizer – Eye Care Foundation (ECF) and some cases that ECF have done before.

Are you a Human Resources professional and working in a WAEH member eye hospital?

The Human Resources Community of practice takes place once every three months. This group meets to discuss topics such as Handholding – From Volunteer to Career, Employment model(s) in ophthalmology, Task differentiation and Burn out prevention. The group will share best practices and learn from each other. This group is led by Jos Hubers from The Rotterdam Eye Hospital, The Netherlands, and Angela Smith from the Moorfields Eye Hospital, United Kingdom. We will meet via Zoom every three months. Christine Nelson, M.D., received the Women in Ophthalmology (WIO) Humanitarian Award!

In recognition of a career of dedicated service, Christine Nelson, M.D., was presented with the Women in Ophthalmology (WIO) Humanitarian Award. The annual award recognizes a WIO member’s efforts to improve lives, alleviate suffering and contribute to the basic human dignity of those in need in the U.S. or abroad.

A clinician, researcher and educator, Dr. Nelson plays a pivotal role on the oculoplastics team. At the same time, as a Co-Director of the Jerome Jacobson International Program at Kellogg, she has traveled to locations from Ethiopia to Jamaica, lending her bound- less energy and compassion to countless efforts to improve eye health among the underserved.

“No matter where she finds herself, she goes about the work at hand with humility and grace,” says Kellogg Interim Chair Shahzad Mian, M.D. “In her uniquely self- less way, she has represented Kellogg around the world while blazing the trail for many others, from the green- est medical students to the most seasoned faculty and alumni, to step out of their comfort zones and serve. She’s an inspiration to us all.”

Organ Donation Week: 
Grandmother makes plea after her sight was saved by others

A grandmother who can only see her loved ones because of organ donation has shared a message calling on people to think about the difference it can not only make to save lives – but sight too.

Julie Currie’s greatest joy is to be able to see her four grandchildren and other family members.

Beyond that, the cornea transplant treatment the Sunderland Eye Infirmary patient has been given means she is not living in the terrible pain her inherited condition can cause.

The 57-year-old, from Darlington, has shared her story to mark Organ Donation Week. The register is now opt-out, rather than sign up, but loved ones are still involved in discussions before a donation takes place following a death.

L V Prasad Eye Institute

The Liberia Eye Center

Liberia, in Western Africa, has an estimated age-standardised prevalence of vision loss of 17% (all causes). India has about 22%, but with a population that is many times bigger. For many years, Liberians needing treatment for most cases of vision loss had to travel to other countries. The country with a population of 5 million people has an acute shortage of eye care human resources and infrastructure to tackle this vision loss. 

In 2013, the noble laureate and former President of Liberia H.E. Dr. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf visited LVPEI. Impressed by the quality of care provided by us, at her request, a team from LVPEI visited the national referral hospital of Liberia, the John F Kennedy Medical Center, to assess local eye care needs. This led to the development of the “Liberia Eye Health Initiative” with a focus on local capacity building. On July 24, 2017, the Liberia Eye Center (LEC) was inaugurated by H.E. President Sirleaf. The key partners who contributed towards its development were the Lions Clubs International Foundation, Operation Eyesight Universal, Indo-American Eye Care Society, the Latter-Day Saint Charities, and OneSight Essilor Luxottica Foundation.
