Two new board members WAEH
The executive board of the World Association of Eye Hospitals welcomes the following two board members:
- Dr. Abdulaziz AIRajhi, representing the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
- Mr. Li Li, representing the Aier Eye Hospital Group, China
Per September 8, Moorfields Eye Hospital (United Kingdom) and St. Erik Eye Hospital (Sweden) (both already member of the board since the establishment of the association) will be represented in the board by:
- Mr. Martin Kuper, representing Moorfields Eye Hospital, United Kingdom
- Dr. Anne Odergren, representing St. Erik Eye Hospital, Sweden
The above was announced during the 15th Annual Meeting of the World Association of Eye Hospitals held on September 8, 2021.
2022 – Call for projects
Each year 2 to 3 projects are led by our member eye hospitals to help shape and improve ophthalmic care on a global scale. Each project can be budgeted with a budget of 7.500 euro. This is paid from the fees of the WAEH membership. We would like to invite all eyehospitals to share their project ideas.
One of the current projects is the WAEH Medical Outcome project: indicator set are developed for Keratoconus and Primary Retinal Detachment (start 2022).
What about the Project Groups?
- They are led by WAEH Members
- Focused on specific themes from Artificial intelligence to Medical outcomes
- Group members network and brainstorm via online Zoom meetings to maximise the impact and reach of sharing knowledge during the projects
- Group members share their lessons learned, knowledge and experience also via the WAEH knowledge hub and via the WAEH newsletter
- Group members host a round table and present their project during the Annual Meeting

Interview with Power Nurse: Adam Mapani

| Adam Mapani was the first nurse featured on The Ophthalmologistâs Power List â back in 2019. In the past, The Ophthalmologist has covered the topic of ophthalmologists working closely with optometrists, in Shared Vision, and Adam has previously talked about the need for extending responsibilities of other healthcare professionals in ophthalmology. Now, The Ophthalmologist Sat Down With Adam to hear all about his work in training nurses to deliver intravitreal injections, helping out at volunteer camps in Africa and the Caribbean, and â more recently â encouraging African communities to get vaccinated against COVID-19, and accepting the Queenâs honor. |

Ayat’s story: sight-saving eye care in the Rohingya refugee camps
At just 11 years old, Ayatâs life had already been filled with more challenges and hardships than many people experience in a lifetime.
His father abandoned his family when he was very little, and to make life even more difficult, his vision started to get blurry when he was just four years old â and continued getting progressively worse.
When Ayat was around six years old, his family were forced to flee their home in Myanmar to neighbouring Bangladesh due to the ongoing conflict and violence in the Rakhine state where they lived.
âWe somehow managed to reach Bangladesh despite my vision problem. But with the passage of time, I became almost blind…â said Ayat.
Ayatâs family found refuge in a Rohingya refugee camp. However, as they had no income and were relying on support from aid organisations to live, they believed theyâd have no chance to get him the eye treatment he desperately needed.

Eye Strain from Computer May Be Sign You Need New Glasses Prescription
Eye strain and headaches can be symptoms of too much screen time. But these also can be the first signs that you need a new glasses prescription, according to optometrist Haley Italia, OD.
Wincing and straining your eyes staring at a screen all day? You may think youâre just getting too much screen time, as many have throughout the pandemic due to increased working from home. However, these symptoms might actually be a signal to call your optometrist to get your vision checked.
âIf a patient comes in and tells me they have a lot of eye strain at the computer, first things first, is I check their glasses prescription,â Haley Italia, OD, an optometrist at Mass Eye and Ear, told Focus.
Dr. Italia answered some questions to help determine whether itâs time for a new prescription and offered some tips to reduce strain from too much screen time.

Moorfields patient receives worldâs first 3D printed eye
A Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust patient was the first person in the world to be supplied solely with a fully digital 3D printed prosthetic eye on 25 November 2021. He first tried his eye on 11 November alongside a traditional acrylic prosthetic. By going home on 25 November with just his printed eye, he is the first patient to use a 3D printed eye as their sole prosthetic.
A 3D printed eye is a true biomimic and a more realistic prosthetic, with clearer definition and real depth to the pupil. Unlike traditional methods, it uses scans of the eye instead of an invasive mould of the eye socket, so difficult for children that they can need a general anaesthetic.

WILLS EYE HOSPITAL Physicians recognized on newsweek’s list of best ophthalmologists 2021
PHILADELPHIA â Seventeen Wills Eye-trained physicians have been named to Newsweekâs inaugural list of Americaâs Best Ophthalmologists 2021. Faculty members Carol L Shields, MD, Christopher J. Rapuano, MD, Carl D. Regillo, MD, FACS, and Brandon D. Ayres, MD were rated in the top 25 percent of the 150-person list based on an independent nationwide survey of doctors, ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other health care professionals with knowledge of ophthalmology. The full list, which also includes 13 Wills Eye alumni, can be viewed on Newsweekâs website.

Moorfields Eye Hospital
Moorfields patient competes at World Triathlon Championship

17 year old para triathlete Oliver Gunning, from Northern Ireland, has reached out to Professor Sir Peng Tee Khaw, to thank him for the surgery he had at Moorfields Eye Hospital as a child.
He is now in his first full season as a competitive para triathlete (category B3/PTVI). Having just turned 17, he has now competed for the first time in the World Triathlon Championship in Abu Dhabi. Not only was he the youngest entrant, he finished 13th in the PTVI category in a race that featured four competitors from Tokyo.
He recently completed the European Triathlon Championships in Valencia (4th in B3, 12th in PTVI) and the points he has won from both these events will help him in his bid to qualify for next year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Magrabi Dubai organized the ‘International Council of Ophthalmology Exam’
Magrabi Hospitals and Centers in Dubai organized the ICO exam in October 2021. Many ophthalmologists from different countries attended the exam.
This exam aims to help ophthalmologists worldwide understand and assess their knowledge of everything related to the field of ophthalmology in terms of basic sciences and clinical sciences.
ICO exams are considered one of the most important and only specialized medical qualification exams in the world in ophthalmology, which works to provide all means of support and assistance to ophthalmologists around the world.

2030 In Sight LIVE!
â2030 In Sight liveâ is the IAPB event we have all been waiting forâan opportunity for us to meet, discuss, and share our plans to implement the new 2030 In Sight strategy. This hybrid event (both in-person and virtual) will be IAPBâs premier event for 2022 and is an opportunity for the IAPB membership and our partners in and outside the eye health sector to meet.
The event presents us with an opportunity to reboot the IAPB Council of Members and update it for the future. With a new format, a new agenda, and a new set of priorities, â2030 In Sight liveâ showcases what the next ten years will begin to look like. Come and join us in Dubai during 2-3 March 2022, and together we can shape our future.
In line with our newly announced sectoral strategy 2030 In Sight, we will focus on three core areas: Elevate, Integrate, and Activate.
