  • Employment size: We have 35 Ophthalmic visiting medical officers at our hospital. They are supported by 13 Administration staff and 24 Nurses (headcount). Nursing staff are comprised of clinical nurse specialists in all peri-operative areas of the day surgery. Comprised of both Registered Nurses and Enrolled Nurses.
    • For context: We’re a private facility and in Australia, no consulting is done at the hospital, all consulting is done at surgeon’s rooms off site. Once the decision is made that surgery is required, the patient attends the hospital for that surgery. Surgeons aren’t employed by hospital, they are visiting medical officers. Our relation is that they are accredited by the board to do surgery here. All pre-operative biometry is done in the surgeons room offsite, and therefore it is important that all paperwork is received prior to surgery to ensure correct lens is available. No optometrists on staff. In Australia, most VMOs would employ orthoptists within their room to do their pre-operative biometry and testing. Optometrists are generally utilised in the community and not in the hospital.
  • Operations: Over 3,000 ophthalmic procedures in the first year alone. The hospital performs the full spectrum of all ophthalmic specialist procedures on both adult and paediatric patients. Approximately 75% of ophthalmic procedures are cataract.
    • For context: The Royal Australia New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) do not encourage intra-vitreal injections to be undertaken within day hospitals. These are considered outpatient procedures and done in their rooms. As a consequence, CPH does not perform these injections within the facility.
  • Average patient stay: 200-220 minutes, approximately 3.5 hours.
  • Hand Hygiene: The benchmark of Australian hand hygiene compliance is approximately 83.9%, while ours is at 87.5%. We regularly top national standards for hand hygiene.
    • For context: We could not find an international benchmark standard to compare our results to, but Australia’s hand hygiene standards are based off of WHO guidelines.
  • We provide the full spectrum of adult and paediatric ophthalmic surgical procedures across all specialities. With the latest technological equipment available including all manufacturers, PHACO machines, VR machine, ECP Cross-Linking and Ceiling mounteed microscopes.
