WAEH 17th Annual Meeting
Submit your poster!
^ The winning poster of the 2018 meeting!
Like in previous years we would like to invite you to submit a poster for the upcoming annual meeting of the WAEH.
- The posters will be displayed during the conference from the 10th till the 12th October 2023 in The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne.
- On both days we would like to invite all people who have send in their poster to be ready during lunch to stand next to their posters and to pitch their poster to the WAEH 2023 attendees that will walk by.
- At the entrance desk you will receive 3 stickers which they can give to the posters.
- The three posters with the most stickers will be invited to present on stage to pitch their poster to the WAEH 2023 crowd!
- The best poster with the most stickers wins the SOL Innovation Award!

Gene Therapy – Dr. Tom Edwards
Meet Dr. Tom Edwards! He is a Melbourne-based vitreoretinal surgeon who also leads a research team investigating retinal gene therapy at the University of Melbourne affiliated Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) based at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital.
Dr. Edwards is working on a number of research projects, including an ongoing world first clinical trial of gene therapy to treat choroideremia, a type of inherited retinal degeneration that leads to blindness. He will be presenting about Gene Therapy during the 17th Annual Meeting!

Bionic Vision update – Dr. Penelope Allen
Meet Dr. Penelope Allen! She is a Principal Investigator at CERA and the Head of Bionic Eye/Vitreoretinal Research.
Dr. Penelope Allen was the leader of the Surgical team for Bionic Vision Australia 2010-2017, leading two clinical trials of the suprachoroidal retinal prosthesis. Her research interests include retinal prostheses, endophthalmitis and Vitreoretinal surgery. She will be presenting about the Suprachoroidal Retinal Prosthesis during the 17th Annual Meeting!

CERA – Professor Keith Martin
Meet Professor Keith Martin! Professor Keith Martin is CERA’s Managing Director. His research focus is on glaucoma, particularly investigating new strategies to protect and regenerate the optic nerve.
Professor Keith Martin is a clinician scientist ophthalmologist and Professor and Head of Ophthalmology at the University of Melbourne. He was first in the world to demonstrate gene therapy and stem cell therapy could reduce retinal ganglion cell death in an experimental model of glaucoma. He will be talking about the Centre for Eye Research Australia during the 17th Annual Meeting!

New Ocular Melanoma innovation treatment – Dr. John McKenzie
Meet Dr John McKenzie! Dr John McKenzie is Head of Oncology at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. He is also the Deputy Director of Ophthalmology at The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, Head of Ophthalmology at Western Health and is also a Professor of Ophthalmology.
He is a highly respected cataract specialist and ophthalmic surgeon with specialist interests in ocular oncology and paediatric ophthalmology. Dr McKenzie performs the latest treatments for wet macular degeneration, vein occlusion and diabetic retinopathy using intravitreal injections. He will be talking about the New Ocular Melanoma innovation treatment during the 17th Annual Meeting!

AI in Clinical Trials for Regenerative Medicine – Mandeep Singh
Meet Mandeep Singh! Mandeep S. Singh MD PhD holds the Andreas C. Dracopoulos Professorship of Ophthalmology and is Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Genetic Medicine at Wilmer Eye Institute Johns Hopkins Hospital – USA. He is a founding Co-Director of the Johns Hopkins Genetic Eye Diseases Center.
Mandeep is a practicing vitreoretinal surgeon and clinician-scientist with a focus on retinal stem cells and genetic ophthalmology. His clinical expertise includes surgical, medical and genetic conditions of the retina and macula. During the 17th Annual Meeting Mandeep will talk about Artificial Intelligence in Clinical Trials for Regenerative Medicine.

Want to know more about the WAEH and meet your fellow-members? Join the WAEH Conservation hour!
This conservation hour is especially for WAEH members to get to know the WAEH a bit better. During this conservation hour, you can pop up all your questions about the WAEH activities like the WAEH Annual Meeting (like sending in an abstract or how to register), Community of Practice – Human resources, Community of Practice for Nurses, Community of Practice Keratoconus, Community of Practice Primary Retinal Detachment, and so on. There is no need to register yourself for this consultation hour, just pop in!
We have planned in the following dates for 2023 – if needed we can include other dates and timings based on your schedule and timezone:

Community of Practice Human Resources Annual Meeting
Register now for the Community of Practice – Human Resources! Once every three months, this group meets to discuss topics such as Handholding – From Volunteer to Career, Employment model(s) in ophthalmology, Task differentiation and Burn out prevention. The group will share best practices and learn from each other. We will meet via Zoom every three months.

Certificate Course on Community Outreach and Social Marketing of Eye
This in-person course combines didactic sessions, field visits, community interaction and assignments. Participants will learn to establish processes and systems for effective planning, execution and monitoring of an outreach programme
Who Can Attend?
This course is for camp organizers, project managers, outreach coordinators, programme coordinators, social workers, counselors, ophthalmic assistants engaged in outreach/ community provision of eye care services.
