What are Schwartz Rounds?
Schwartz Rounds provide a structured forum where all staff, clinical and non-clinical, come together to discuss the emotional and social aspects of working in healthcare. Rounds can help staff feel more supported in their jobs, allowing them the time and space to reflect on their roles.
Schwartz Rounds are facilitated, confidential meetings where staff from all backgrounds and professions come together to discuss the emotional and social challenges associated with their jobs. They offer staff a regular scheduled time and place in which they can openly and honestly discuss the personal impact of working in health care. Rounds are non-problem solving, with the focus of rounds focusing on the human dimension of healthcare and personal experience.
The Moorfields Schwartz Round team invites you and your team to attend the Online Schwartz Round on Friday 10th December 2021 13.00-14.00 UK time.
We are looking for 2 panelists to share their stories with us. Do you have a story to share? How has Covid affected you? What is your new norm in the workplace? What is your new norm in your personal life.

2021 – Call for projects
Each year 2 to 3 projects are led by our member eye hospitals to help shape and improve ophthalmic care on a global scale. Each project can be budgeted with a budget of 7.500 euro. This is paid from the fees of the WAEH membership. We would like to invite you again to share your project ideas.
Current projects are the WAEH Medical Outcome project and the WAEH Clinician Burn out project.
What about the Project Groups?
- They are WAEH Members
- They collaborate on specific themes from Artificial intelligence to Medical outcomes
- They network and brainstorm via online Zoom meetings to maximise the impact and reach of sharing knowledge during the projects
- They share their lessons learned, knowledge and experience also via the WAEH knowledge hub and via the WAEH newsletter
- They host a round table and present their project during the Annual Meeting

Eye injections can save vision
Intravitreal jabs offer efficacious treatment and hope for patients with various retinal conditions.
Can eye injections stave off blindness or prevent further vision loss due to retinal conditions? A study by the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) published in the Ophthalmology Retina journal in late 2019 found that injections of anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) drugs could arrest vision decline in about 95 per cent of patients with exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The anti-VEGF drugs block the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the eye that affect vision.

Nearly 3 in 5 not had routine eye test in past year with Gen X & Baby Boomers most at risk of vision loss
New findings published for World Sight Day reveal the state of eye health across Britain. Nearly 3 in 5 people have not had their eyes tested in the past year. While almost a third (29%) admit their last eye test was more than two years ago. This is despite 1 in 3 people admitting their eyesight has got worse since the start of the pandemic.
The findings are particularly worrying for Gen x and Baby Boomers who are more at risk of vision loss from preventable conditions.
The NHS recommends people have an eye test every two years, especially those over 40 years of age who have a history of glaucoma, and adults with diabetes. Yet, more than a third (35%) of adults aged 45-54 years of age and 1 in 5 adults (20%) aged 55 + admit their last eye test was more than two years ago. This puts them at greater risk of avoidable vision loss from conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.

Eyeglasses For School Kids Boost Academic Performance, Study Find
Three-year clinical study is the most robust analysis to date linking access to eyeglasses with higher test scores, especially for students having the most trouble in school
Students who received eyeglasses through the school-based Vision for Baltimore program scored higher on reading and math tests, Johns Hopkins researchers from the WilmerEye Institute and School of Education found in the largest clinical study of the impact of glasses on education ever conducted in the United States. Students who struggled the most academically before receiving glasses showed the greatest improvement, the researchers found.

New STAAR Corner at Singapore National Eye Centre offers digital devices enabling people with low vision to see better
SNEC’s Inaugural Assistive Technology Vision Week entailed forum discussing use of assistive devices and smart technology for people with low vision.
Singapore, 16 October 2021 — The Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) marked its inaugural Assistive Technology Vision Week today. Held via a public webinar and forum with partners of SNEC, it aims to raise awareness of how assistive technology can improve the quality of life for those with low vision. The event also saw the official launch of the Smart Technology Active Ageing Resource (STAAR) Corner at SNEC, intended to benefit people with low vision. The webinar was graced by Mrs Josephine Teo, Minister for Communications and Information, and Minister-in-charge of Smart Nation and Cybersecurity.

AIER Eye Hospital Group
AIER Eye Hospital Group officially has a seat on the board of the World Association of Eye Hospital
World Association of Eye Hospitals (referred to as WAEH) announced at its online annual meeting held on September 8, 2021, that AIER Eye Hospital Group (referred to as AIER) officially became a member of the board of the WAEH. President of AIER Mr. Li Li attended the meeting as the representative. In the future, Mr. Li will represent AIER with the representatives from the following ten board members, as well as participate in the management and strategic decision-making of the association.
The new board members include King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Saudi Arabia, whose representative is Dr. Abdulaziz AIRajhi.

Four students from across the country spent their summers gaining valuable experience at Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Medicine, through an initiative designed to establish a more inclusive workforce of highly talented ophthalmologists.
The Diversity Scholars Program at Wilmer serves to nourish leadership culture and equity in health care by preparing outstanding rising second-year medical students who are from underrepresented backgrounds and are considering specializing in ophthalmology.

Mount Sinai Launches First and Only Eye Stroke Service in New York City to Rapidly Diagnose and Treat Blinding Condition
Advanced technology and new protocols aim to expedite care to prevent permanent vision loss
New York, NY (October 18, 2021) – Mount Sinai Health System has launched the first eye stroke service in New York City to expedite the diagnosis and treatment of patients who arrive at the emergency room with eye stroke—a medical emergency that must be addressed as quickly as possible to prevent irreversible vision loss.
Four emergency departments in the Mount Sinai Health System are now the only sites in New York City equipped with advanced high-resolution imaging systems to rapidly detect eye stroke. These, along with new communication and treatment protocols between emergency medicine physicians, ophthalmologists, and the stroke service, allow patients to have an urgent procedure to preserve their vision within a few hours (or less) of arriving at the hospital.

Wills Eye Hospital Physicians recognized on newsweek’s list of best Ophthalmologists 2021
FOUR WILLS EYE FACULTY MEMBERS AND 13 ALUMNI MADE THE LIST
PHILADELPHIA – Seventeen Wills Eye-trained physicians have been named to Newsweek’s inaugural list of America’s Best Ophthalmologists 2021. Faculty members Carol L Shields, MD, Christopher J. Rapuano, MD, Carl D. Regillo, MD, FACS, and Brandon D. Ayres, MD were rated in the top 25 percent of the 150-person list based on an independent nationwide survey of doctors, ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other health care professionals with knowledge of ophthalmology. The full list, which also includes 13 Wills Eye alumni, can be viewed on Newsweek’s website.

The ‘Big 4’ eye diseases comprise two thirds eyecare services in Finland (age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and cataract). Although the national access to care criteria and Current Care Guidelines have been available since 2004, they have not been able to narrow the large unwarranted variations in service delivery.
In collaboration with all five university eye clinics, the comprehensive pioneering holistic real-time learning ecosystem has been developed to collect and evaluate the real world outcomes of all ‘Big 4’. The ecosystem aims to improve resilience against multiple environmental challenges in health care and to define the optimal and equal service level.
